For those worrying about whether CBD spoils or loses potency after a certain time, here are a few helpful tips to make sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck and be sustainable at the same time.
What Is The Expiration Timeline For CBD
All CBD products vary in expiration depending on the quality and type of product. CBD products that contain high quality CBD oil, like the ones available at Social CBD, tend to last longer.
Sentia Wellness, the manufacturer of Social CBD products conducts third party Accelerated Shelf Life (ASL) testing at an ISO 17025 certified third party laboratory for all of their products.
Using this testing data, Sentia Wellness concluded that our ingestibles, like Social CBD oil drops are best consumed within 18 months of production. Though, it is important to note that this timeline may be extended if future substantiation allows.
Alternatively, Sentia Wellness recently made the decision not to put expiration dates on topicals (as permitted by FDA guidelines). Our CBD patches and CBD topicals are currently undergoing stability testing and to date, we have not seen any CBD degradation in these products or any indication that the products are not safe to use.
Although it’s important to remember, expiration timelines also vary depending on how the CBD product is stored.
Does CBD Spoil In Heat Or Extreme Cold?
How and where you decide to store your CBD products can be critical in extending or shortening the shelf life.
CBD, after all, is derived from a plant, so being aware if your stash of CBD is stored in direct sunlight or intense heat can be critical to ensuring that the CBD does not lose potency prior to the expiration date.
While CBD does not spoil in the sense that it will turn rancid and cause sickness or bad reactions in the user, CBD oils, pens, and gummies will lose potency from interacting with heat and sunlight too often.
The boiling point of CBD is between 320 degrees and 356 degrees Fahrenheit. That being said, CBD can be baked or cooked at a low temperature and still retain most of its nutritional benefits.
Alternatively, you do not need to worry if your product appears frozen. The MCT oil that is used in our drops solidifies at 26 degrees fahrenheit and if it’s left outside on a very cold day, you’ll most likely see it in a frozen state.
There are no adverse effects that happen to the ingredients inside when it “freezes.” All you need to do is take your bottle and place it on your counter to warm back up to room temperature. Do not place the oil in or on any warming devices as rapid heating could cause damage to your product.
Where Should You Store Your CBD Products
The team at Social CBD recommends storing your CBD products in a cool, dark place within your home. Especially well out of the reach of any small children or pets that may access any storage area.
To help along the storage process, Social CBD also tints all of their bottles containing drops brown to reduce the amount of sunlight able to penetrate the bottle. Similar to what brewing companies do to their beer bottles.
Additionally, be sure to store any CBD drops upright, not horizontally, to ensure the bottles work properly to deflect and detract sunlight from causing a loss in potency.
